Elevator Reuse: Collingwood, Ontario

Buffalo has an abundance of unused grain elevators, a nod to our past industrial might but a headscratcher as how to reuse them for anything besides their original purpose.  Silo City developer Generation Development Group has a multi-phase plan to bring residential and commercial space to the Silo City site along the Buffalo River but the focus is on reuse of the mill and warehouse complexes. Generation Development and owner Rick Smith are looking at a number of alternatives for the silos themselves, including residential reuse, commercial or cultural use, or even stabilizing and leaving as-is as industrial landmarks.

To the north, the partnership of Streetcar Developments and Dream Unlimited recently unveiled plans to redevelop the Collingwood Terminals complex in Collingwood, Ontario. Their plan includes public realm enhancements and access, preservation and adaptive reuse of the Terminals including a full-service boutique hotel, restaurant and event space in the elevator complex and a new adjacent 24-story residential component.

The current “bin floor” atop the Terminal is envisioned as a publicly accessible feature with sweeping views of Georgian Bay.

The developers signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Town of Collingwood after being selected over two other firms that submitted plans for the complex. The Town is contributing $15 million to the project primarily for public space and infrastructure upgrades and will maintain ownership of most of the land surrounding the site.
